Ageism: It's Not Just for Old People Anymore

CARE's June '14 Educational Seminar

Saturday June 28, 2014

11:00am-1:00pm

Ageism: It’s Not Just for Old People Anymore

Presenter: Dr. Stephanie Haibloom, Psy.D.
Psychological Assistant# PSB940202274
Supervised by Charlyne Gelt, PhD (PSY22909)

Summary: Ageism is a growing problem today in America. In this presentation Dr. Haibloom will discuss a brief history of ageism, how it affects both younger and older populations as well as how it impacts us as therapists and as people in general, and what can be done to eliminate or at least reduce its impact on those same populations. Ageist attitudes have an impact not only on the treatment process and expectations of the patient, but also on the outcome of the treatment itself. It is important for clinicians to be aware of such attitudes within themselves and how viewing clients in a stereotypical manner may affect their treatment and diagnosis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn the back history of ageism.

  • Attendees will learn how ageism affects different populations.

  • Attendees will be able to identify ageism in themselves and others.

  • Attendees will identify ways to reduce the impact of ageism on different populations.

  • Attendees will learn to identify ways in which their attitudes are impacting the therapeutic process, their clients, and the outcome of the treatment itself.
